Paul George Suffers Hyperextended Knee During 76ers Preseason Game

Philadelphia 76ers star Paul George faced an unfortunate setback during Monday's preseason win against the Atlanta Hawks, suffering a hyperextended left knee in the second quarter. The injury occurred as George defended Hawks forward Jalen Johnson, planting his leg awkwardly and bending it at an unnatural angle. George quickly exited the game, and while he remained optimistic about the injury, the 76ers were cautious, ruling him out for the remainder of the night.
“Hopefully it’ll be OK, so he’s back with us right away,” said 76ers coach Nick Nurse, expressing optimism about George's quick return to action.
This preseason marks George’s first with the 76ers after signing a four-year max contract in the offseason. Despite this setback, George emphasized to The Philadelphia Inquirer that he’s not overly concerned, noting, “I felt that it hyperextended, and immediately I knew I needed to get it checked out.”
Philadelphia has been treading carefully with its star players this preseason. Joel Embiid, the team’s dominant center, has already been ruled out for the remainder of the preseason as he continues to ramp up his conditioning ahead of the regular season opener against the Milwaukee Bucks. With Embiid’s history of knee injuries and George’s current hyperextension, 76ers president of basketball operations Daryl Morey mentioned that both players are likely to see limited action in back-to-back games this season to preserve their long-term health.
George, who has dealt with injuries in the past, played 74 games in his final season with the Clippers—the most he’s played since 2019. With the season just around the corner, the 76ers hope George will recover swiftly to join Embiid as they aim for a successful campaign.
