Dolphins Fear Significant Knee Injury for WR/RS Braxton Berrios: What’s Next for Miami?

Miami Dolphins wide receiver and return specialist Braxton Berrios is facing a potentially significant knee injury. According to his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, Berrios is scheduled for an MRI on Monday after sustaining the injury during Sunday’s 16-10 loss to the Indianapolis Colts.

Berrios, 29, was hurt late in the game following a 26-yard kickoff return in the fourth quarter. Despite not making an impact on offense this season, with zero receptions through six games, Berrios has been a valuable asset on special teams. Notably, he delivered a 44-yard punt return against the Seattle Seahawks and a 27-yard return versus the Tennessee Titans.

If Berrios misses extended time, the Dolphins may turn to rookie Malik Washington, a sixth-round pick, to take on additional offensive snaps and handle punt returns. Washington is currently listed as the backup punt returner, while De’Von Achane, the team's starting running back, is listed as the backup for kickoff returns. However, the team may opt to protect Achane from unnecessary risk and use Washington in both return roles.

Berrios, who earned All-Pro honors as a returner with the New York Jets in 2021, joined the Dolphins last year as a free agent and was re-signed earlier this year.

If Berrios is sidelined for a lengthy period, the Dolphins will need to adjust their special teams and potentially look for additional depth to cover his absence. Fans will be eagerly awaiting updates following the results of his MRI.
